Science Fairs

This page introduces the science-related activities that I have participated in. 

7th-grade:
Vertical Axis Wind Turbine Research

I initially participated in the science fair because of my enthusiasm for renewable energy sources. I independently accomplished an experiment on Vertical axis wind turbines. I used 3D printers to print 20 kinds of turbines, and several designed fan cowls that I made for the research. Among all, the observation of the air current is the most mentionable. We all know that electrical power data could be measured by voltmeters; the info of wind could be scaled by anemometers. However, it is a problem to acquire the data of the floating air through scientific methods. After coming up with many solutions and several rounds of discussions with my teacher, I made up my mind to reach the final knowledge by smokeballs with high-speed cameras in a transparent acrylic box for observing the thrust-to-drag ratio. And I finally won second place in the municipal competition.

7th-grade:
National Living Technology Competition 

Including me, there are three members in the group. We spent 10 weeks of after-school time in total to build an actual hydraulic press, making a simple visual minimized model to catch the match. We ended up gaining the championship in Hsinchu City and a national honorable mention.

8th-grade:
Buoyant Boxes and Water Turbines

In the period of my 8th grade, I was still working on renewable power, but the difference is that I changed the topic into wave power. The topic might not be so hard, but there was a tortuous process. For this time, I focused on the theory and the highest efficiency combination about the buoyant boxes and the water turbine. This time, I cooperated with two instructors for my requirement of more knowledge about fluid mechanics as well. In order to generate and observe waves, we bought an aquarium wave maker and built a 100x30x30cm case after calculations and simulations. As for the electricity acquisition, I used the modified Brushless DC Motor to connect the buoyant boxes I made with a 3D printer. The most complicated point was how to measure the volume that my irregular buoyant boxes were in the water. After a long-term work, I eventually won second place in the science fair again instead.

8th-grade:
Hsinchu Maker Holiday

I had the opportunity to represent the entire student body, consisting of approximately 3,000 students, in the 2020 Hsinchu Maker Holiday when I was a junior high school student. This event was organized in collaboration between the Hsinchu City Government and the National Tsing Hua University. Our primary role was to participate in the opening ceremony alongside the mayor. If you search my name on Google, you will find related news articles about this event.
